Down to one night. Tuesday went well and the bid continue to climb on the silent auction. And thanks to all who are bidding and buying the t-shirts.

Thursday, we're hoping the rain will leave us alone so we can cap a great week. We have survivors throwing out all the pitches and Hornsby in the house. Will also have fire trucks and police cars to "visit."

Day 1 Recap (April 28, 2008)

Great first night of Strikes Against Cancer on Monday at the Owasso Sports Complex.

We had two cancer survivors (Faye Howard and Chris Kuhn) throw out first pitches and every one of the 22 auction items ended up with a bid or two. Owasso Assistant City Manager Timothy Rooney is looking to see if they can lend me a megaphone so that people can better hear when I announce the survivors.

It was great to see all the teams that got in the spirit of things with special uniforms, adding pink to the current uniforms or just adding a sticker to a helmet. And my Tiger assistant coaches (Brett Littlefield and Mike Kauk) looked sharp in the official Strikes Against Cancer pink t-shirts.

Remember, you can buy the t-shirts (ranging in sizes from adult small to XXL) for $12 at the canopy next to the concession stand ... $6 of every t-shirt sale goes to the Tulsa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

And any donations you make in the buckets throughout the park will also go to Komen along with all the money raised in the silent auction.

Hopefully tonight there won't be any fires that pull the fire trucks out of the park, but we appreciate the City showing up and lending support. Thanks again to Fire Chief Bradd Clark and Police Chief Dan Yancey.

On Thursday (May 1), we will have a special visitor at the park .... Hornsby. The Tulsa Drillers will be sending everyone's favorite blue bull to the park for an hour or so. So make sure you bring the kids.

A lot of people have helped get this event rolling, but I wanted to thank our field crew for the excellent job on the fields, the concession workers for keeping things moving and our umpires. Two of last night's umpires (Tom Aurilio and Paul Downing) donated one of their game checks to the event.

Would also like to thank the Buchanan and Thompson families for their help getting things set up and Lynn "Big Momma" Gibson for her tireless effort in making sure everything softball is so successful.

Some of you have called and e-mailed asking how you can help. Well, glad you asked. The OGSA is needing help during the Strikes Against Cancer week at the Sports Complex. We will need people to help man the donation jars at the gate entrances, hang banners, sell t-shirts, hand out stuff at information tables and help prep fields between play.

The OGSA is looking for items to be placed in a silent auction that will take place during league games on April 28, 29 and May 1 at the Owasso Sports Complex. The winning bidder will be determined on May 1 after all silent auction sheets are collected.

Mike Melega, Tulsa Drillers general manager, has agreed to send everyone’s favorite blue bull to the Owasso Sports Complex on May 1 for a meet-and-greet appearance. Hornsby will be in the park around 7 p.m. and will stay an hour or so. Hornsby will be available for autographs, taking photos with and some old-fashioned goofing off.

The Drillers are big supporters of both breast cancer awareness and girls softball. In fact, the Drillers will be having their own event in conjunction with Susan G. Komen for the Cure on May 10. During their pink night, Drillers players will be wearing pink uniforms that will be signed and auctioned off during the game. There will also be a fireworks display following the game.

Here’s the first look at the inaugural Strikes Against Cancer promotional t-shirt. The shirts were designed by PROMOZ in Tulsa, Okla. The OGSA will be selling the shirts at the complex during the event in limited quantities. Shirts will be sold for $12 with $5 from each sale going to the Tulsa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
